Childsmile
"Childsmile is a programme created by the NHS to improve the dental health of children in Scotland."
As a Childsmile Practice, Southside Dental Care promotes oral health from birth, particularly amongst people living in priority areas.
Parents of newborn children who are assessed to be at risk of developing tooth decay are referred to the programme by their Health Visitor.
Once you've agreed to take part, your dentist will arrange for you to meet our practice Childsmile nurse Ruth Weir.
As your child gets older, the Southside Dental Care Team will provide additional preventive care, such as:
Fluoride varnish: Is a highly concentrated form of fluoride which is applied to the tooth's surface by a dentist, dental hygienist or other health care professional. Research has shown that fluoride varnish is highly effective at reducing tooth decay if it is applied at least twice a year. The fluoride varnish is a golden gel that sets quickly when it is applied. The golden colour wears off after a few days. To keep children happy it has a pleasant taste and a fruity smell.
Fissure Sealants: Are plastic coatings that are painted onto the grooves of the back teeth. The sealant forms a protective layer thats keeps food and bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay. The process is usually quick and easy taking only a few minutes per tooth. The tooth is thoroughly cleaned, prepared with a special solution, and dried. The sealant is then applied and allowed to set hard – usually by shining an blue light onto it.
